The Ring wall of Visby is a city wall around the medieval part of Visby. The wall stretches around for 3.6 kilometers and some part reach 11 meters high. Originally it had 29 ground towers and 22 or 23 saddle tower. Today 27 of the ground towers are left and only nine of the saddle towers. The wall have been essential to make Visby a cultural heritage site.
The reason for the walls existence can probably be linked to the conflicts between the city of Visby and the surrounding island, which led to a civil war on the island in 1288. One of the oldest parts of the wall, south of the Kvarntornet, can possibly have been razed at the beginning of this war when Visby was captured and pillaged.
