Olde Town Portsmouth

On this "Adventure" we will be visiting two historic Episcopal churches (Trinity and St. John's) and 3 historic homes (Watts House, Bell House & Hill House) in a beautiful neighborhood in Portsmouth, Virginia. Olde Town contains the largest collection of 18th & 19th century historic homes (over 200) between Alexandria & Charleston, SC. Dean Burgess, local historian has written, “The town of Portsmouth entered upon its municipal existence on Feb. 27, 1752. It was laid out like an English country town with broad streets alternating with narrow ones in a grid pattern. It was also laid off in squares & is one of the few American cities to retain the original names of its blocks. One explanation for this layout is that the elegant houses stood on the broad streets & the homes of the artisans and lesser lights on the narrow streets.”
