Nettleton means 'the place where nettles grow'. The village is situated on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). Nettleton offers a surprising variety of scenery and interesting walking routes to explore, including a section of the Viking Way, the long distance footpath that runs from the Humber Bridge to Rutland Water.
In the Nettleton Beck glacial valley are the remains of the area's Iron ore mining past, and although mining ceased in 1968 bricked up tunnel entrances, some buildings and a track way can still be seen. What are arguably the best views in Lincolnshire can be experienced from Nettleton Top, with Lincoln Cathedral, the Humber Bridge and even the Pennines visible on a clear day.
