Anderson's Mill

On the banks of Birch's Creek in Smeaton, Anderson's Mill stands as a powerful reminder of an industry that flourished after the gold rush of the 1850's. History of the mill is in fact the history of the Anderson family, who researched, designed, built and then operated the mill for the duration of its working life. Construction of the flour mill commenced in 1861 and it was operational within six months. The Oat section of the Mill was completed by the following harvest. Between 1865 and 1874 the mill became one of the major industrial and commercial enterprises of rural Victoria. Anderson's Mill operated for almost 100 years until its closure in 1959. The mill remained dormant for many years, until the site was purchased by the Victorian Government due to its historical significance in 1987 and painstakingly restored as you see it today. Enjoy your wander around the buildings and don't forget to collect the coordinates for the Bonus Cache in the final Journal Entry. GC906RQ
