In 1871 William King, a newspaper publisher, had the idea for a large park like cemetery well away from Minneapolis. 130 acres of rolling hills out in the country were chosen for the cemetery. Eleven miles of wide, winding roads and an eight-acre lake, called Jo Pond, were built by workers aided by horses and wagons. Lakewood was dedicated on Sept 16, 1872. Lakewood is a nonprofit, nondenominational cemetery.
