Kensico Dam Plaza

The Kensico Dam was built using stone taken from the adjacent Cranberry Lake Park. More electric power was applied for its creation than any other construction work for the Catskill water supply. The crushing plant at the quarry was the largest ever placed on contract work, and a railroad was built solely for the purpose of carrying debris from the construction site to landfills. The dam was completed in 1917. It is 307 feet high and 1,843 feet long, and forms the Kensico reservoir, one of the main drinking water supplies of New York City. To complete this adventure lab, you will walk the loop trail that brings you from the plaza up to the crown of the dam, and then back down on the other side. The questions shouldn't be difficult (D1.5), but the long stairway to the top of the dam takes some stamina (T3). Take your time & enjoy!
