Part of the Erie Canal Adventure Lab Trail. Rochester, NY is a mid-sized city on the shores of Lake Ontario. Rochester, known as "The Flower City" and "The World's Image Center", is the third-largest city in the state of New York, after New York City and Buffalo. Born in the early nineteenth century as a small village on the Genesee River and when the Erie Canal was built, it grew the small village to become America's first boomtown. Rochester is proud of its unique architectural and landscape heritage, and its citizens recognize the importance of retaining and maintaining this built history.
