San José is known nowadays as "The Capital of Silicon Valley". The city styles itself a haven of high-tech & forward thinking. But San José has been "forward thinking" for a lot longer than you might imagine.
The Costanoans were here for millennia before Europeans arrived in the 18th century. The Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was founded in 1777...the 1st civic settlement in the Spanish colony of Nueva California. It was established to support the military Presidios of San Francisco & Monterey, as those coastal cities were too foggy to raise livestock or grow the crops needed to feed the troops.
From these humble beginnings, SJ's vibrant downtown became a hub that supported one of the most abundant agricultural regions in the country. Our many extant late 19th & early 20th century buildings are a testament to the long history of "The Valley of the Heart's Delight".
