A Walk Back in Time - Chardon OH

Chardon Ohio was founded in 1812 when Capt. Edward Paine, Jr. moved into the log cabin which would be his temporary home on Chardon Square and would also serve as a courthouse. The land plat was formerly owned by Peter Chardon Brooks of Boston. Chardon Square is the quintessential example of New England town planning with its focus on a central green and surrounded by the most important community institutions and with the homes of the most prominent citizens built on the east side of the square. Chardon grew slowly and took over 30 years to reach a population of 446 people in 1840 and to this day the small town spirit is alive and well in the city of Chardon. In 1868 The Great Fire devastated Main Street and 2 years later Mayor E.V. Canfield's resolve resulted in the buildings you see on Main Street today. The starting point is the gazebo and very near to location #1. The photos used in the AL were made available by the Chardon Historical Society.
