Greenwich Village History

Welcome to Groenwijck! Formerly known as the "Green District" by Dutch settlers, this neighborhood was once a rural, isolated hamlet in the 17th Century. Since then, Greenwich Village has retained multiple generations of cultural influence, standing today as one of the most unique developments in all of New York City. This walking tour through GV's Historic District will reference a variety of landmarks and locations that have changed the course of history. Budget approximately 45 minutes to experience the journey, while navigating cobblestone streets and back-alleys that were mostly developed prior to the Commissioners' Plan of 1811.
