Mitchel Field Air Force Base

This Adventure Lab will be a WALKING🚶‍♂️tour of the historical buildings, once known as Mitchel Field (MF). It is now occupied by a local college, with strict parking rules. I created this AL with the assistance of Paul Martin III, a historian and author. During the Revolutionary War, MF was known as Hempstead Plains, an Army enlistment center. MF has been a significant area for military use in the subsequent wars until it’s closure in 1961. During WWI, it was a training facility for aviators. Several aviation advances began here, from, broken airspeeds, flying a plane blind, using only instruments, it was the starting point on a non stop transcontinental bomber flight, and was part of 1st long range reconnaissance mission. During WWII, many men were deployed and returned back to this facility. After MF closed, it soon became a college, and occupied some of the MF’s buildings. It is because of this, these buildings has been preserved. MF has been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018
