The siege of Sarajevo was a prolonged blockade of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the Bosnian War. After initially being besieged by the forces of the Yugoslav People's Army, the city was then besieged by the Army of Republika Srpska from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996 (1425 days).
It lasted more than a year longer than the siege of Leningrad and was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare.
Over the course of the siege, the city has hit been hit by an average of approximately 329 shell impacts per day, with a high of 3777 shell impacts on 22 July 1993. This shellfire has caused extensive damage to the city's structures, including civilian and cultural property.
According to United Nations it is estimated that nearly 10000 persons have been killed or are missing in the city during the siege, including over 1500 children.
