Nassau County’s Historic Airfields 1900-1980

This Adventure Lab will take you to the various historical airfields of Nassau County. It spans from Valley Stream, in the west to Bethpage in the east. Because it expands across Nassau County, you may want to do this in more than one trip. Click on any location to begin Long Island is the perfect location for airfields. The naturally flat Hempstead Plains, made for an ideal flying field. The close proximity to NewYork City, a large and populous city on the east coast, right by the Atlantic Ocean, created a perfect spot. With the development of suburbia after WWII, some buildings remain on some of the airfields today, other airfields, almost nothing remains. The airfields have changed into housing, malls, and other uses. Many important aviation milestones also happened right here, on Long Island. The airfields we will look at will be, Roosevelt Fields, Mitchell Field, Curtiss/Wright Flying Airfield, Grumman and the LI Aviation Country Club.
