De acordo com a tradição, as habitações da freguesia são pintadas na cor branca com barras realçando a pedra de cantaria e delineadas com a cor tradicional de cada uma das freguesias da ilha: o azul anil representa Santa Bárbara, a cor verde é encontrada em Santo Espírito, o amarelo ocre identifica São Pedro, a cor almagre está em Almagreira e o cinzento característico da Vila do Porto. Cada uma destas cores representa a rusticidade das freguesias e identifica, imediatamente, o local por onde estamos a passar. Há ruas, contudo, que apresentam uma multiplicidade de cores porque o habitante de uma freguesia, ao mudar de residência, pode levar consigo a cor identificativa da sua freguesia de origem, preservando o lado emocional da sua terra natal. According to tradition, the houses in the parish are painted white with bars highlighting the stonework and outlined with the traditional colour of each of the island's parishes: indigo blue represents Santa Bárbara, green is found in Santo Espírito, yellow ochre identifies São Pedro, almagre (a kind of yed) is in Almagreira and grey is characteristic of Vila do Porto. Each of these colours represents the rusticity of the parishes and immediately identifies the place we are passing through. There are streets, however, that have a multiplicity of colours because when people move to another parish, they can simply take with them the identifying colour of their parish of origin, preserving the emotional side of their hometown.
