ECALT THE ERIE BARGE CANAL at THE TONAWANDAS

Depending upon your age and home location, you may or may not know the words to this song! "I've got a mule and her name is Sal, 15 miles on the Erie Canal." Not to worry, this Adventure will not take you 15 miles along the canal, but rather explore a few stops in the Tonawandas. Parking is available at nearby TOPS or Walgreens. There is also short term boat parking if you are coming via water! There will be legs that are only accessible by walking. The initial work on the Erie Barge Canal was begun on July 4, 1817. However, work began in earnest in August of 1823 and completed in October 26, 1825. On that date, Governor Dewitt Clinton aboard the Seneca Chief started his journey from Buffalo to New York City. He made it in record time....just 10 days! It provided an important navigable water passage from Albany, New York, on the Hudson River to Buffalo at Lake Erie. This was true back then, however the Canal now ends here as the section that continued to Buffalo has long since been filled in.
