Major Interstates in Tennessee Tennessee is served by numerous federal highways that allow residents and visitors to easily travel throughout the state. The interstate system in the United States was first formed in 1956 at the request of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the first interstate opened in Tennessee was Interstate 65 near the Tennessee-Alabama line in 1958. Since then, seven primary interstates and seven auxiliary interstates have been built to improve traffic flow throughout the state.
