Welcome to Dogellau.
The success of Dolgellau has largely been due to the wool trade. This mainly hand worked trade reached its peak around 1800, beginning to decline when unable to compete with mechanisation.
The town eventually developed as a tourism centre with harpists for hire and mule trips to Cadair Idris. The town centre has not changed much in the last hundred years. Older buildings have rough irregular stones, whereas more modern buildings have stones that have more regular lines.
There are over 200 listing buildings or buildings of architectural interest in the town, the highest concentration of any town in Wales. A town trail can be purchase in town from the wine bar or seen here http://www.garthyfog.co.uk/dolgellau_town_trail.htm
