The Jack Kerouac Centennial

Considered one of the most important authors of the 20th century, Jack Kerouac left a legacy for his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. He was raised in a Franco-American household and spoke French as his first language. Known for works such as On the Road and The Town & the City, Kerouac’s novels were often about his life and memories as a child. Kerouac also dedicated his writing to Lowell, especially in The Town & the City, which reflected his upbringing in the town of 100,000 residents with many local businesses, churches, and other locations receiving mentions in his work. In 1988, the City of Lowell formally dedicated Eastern Canal Park to the Jack Kerouac Commemorative. Now known as Kerouac Park, the area shares excerpts of the hometown author’s work on granite slabs for residents to enjoy. This Adventure Lab will take you on a tour through Lowell to visit many of the places important to Jack Kerouac’s story. This Adventure Lab is sponsored by the Government of Quebec.
