The Harrier

If you didn’t grow up in Simcoe, ON & attend Simcoe Composite School (SCS), you may not be familiar with the term “harrier”. If you were an SCS student, “The Harrier” may conjure up fond or not-so-fond memories! The Harrier, as I know it, was a run we did in Phys. Ed. class. I thought then, and up until very recently, that it was named after someone. However, when putting together this adventure lab, I learned the following definition: A runner, specifically, a cross country runner. This was confirmed by one of my Phys Ed teachers at SCS, Nancy Allen: When I first started at SCS in ‘75 I had no idea what this Harrier thing was that I was supposed to test. Found out it was an English/Scottish term for cross country runner. The Harrier had us run from the back door of the gymnasium, out to Wilson Avenue (now called Wilson Drive), south onto Basil Avenue, west onto Argyle Street, down the path alongside Crystal Lake, north on Norfolk Street and then east on Wilson Drive, back to the starting point.
