The Battles of Bull Run & Manassas

The First Battle of Bull Run, also the Battle of Manassas, and sometimes facetiously called the Picnic Battle, marked the first major land battle of the American Civil War. On July 21, 1861, Union and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The engagement began when about 35,000 Union troops marched from the federal capital in Washington, D.C. to strike a Confederate force of 20,000 along a small river known as Bull Run. The Second Battle of Bull Run was at that point the largest battle ever in the Western Hemisphere. It was fought over much of the same ground as the First Battle of Bull Run. The successful Confederate attack near the end “was the largest massed infantry assault on either side of the entire American Civil War.” Roughly 1,700 Union soldiers and 1,200 Confederates were killed, and a combined total of more than 14,000 were wounded. Words & Clues are provided for The Battles of Bull Run & Manassas Bonus Cache (GC8R5DT). This adventure takes about 1 hour.
