Allonby past and present

Allonby lies within the Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty with extensive views across to Southern Scotland. The settlement probably dates back to the 12th or 13th centuries and over the years it has been associated with salt making, smuggling, ship breaking, weaving and fishing. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) established a Meeting House here in the early 18th century and had a great influence in the community along with the Temperance Movement. Tourism began in the 18th century however Allonby later began to lose out to Silloth further up the coast. Today it is mainly seen as either a day trip destination from north and west Cumbria or a place for second home ownership with its many caravan and chalet parks. England's Coast Path and Hadrian's Cycleway (NCN72) both pass though the village. The selected locations can be visited in any order in less than an hour on foot. The starting coordinates are for one of the many car parks along the coast, each as potholed as the rest!
