Mohawk Park -Then and Now

In 1826 a Crown deed for a large tract of land was granted to John Lovejoy. A beautiful grove of trees on his estate became known as Lovejoy’s Grove. In 1894 the area was developed into a park and the grand opening took place May 24, 1895. The park had a railway through it, a speedway, a cricket crease and tennis court, a boathouse, as well as a merry-go-round and a carousel. The 55 acres of shade trees are still here. The park became well known as a place for large picnics and the lake hosted canoeing and regattas. In 1915 the city of Brantford purchased the park. Mohawk Park continues to be a place for families to gather and to hold large picnics The park hosts a pavilion, several picnic shelters, a children’s playground, fitness trail, disc golf course, sprinklemania, bocce courts, an outdoor rink in winter and a few geocaches too!
