Penetanguishene - Remnants of History

Rich in history Penetanguishene was settled in the 800 AD by the Wynadot people, the first European arrived between 1610 and 1614. The towns name is believed to come from either the Wynadot or Ojibwe word for “land of white rolling sands”. In 1793, John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant of Upper Canada, visited the area and saw the location’s potential as a Royal Navy naval base protecting Upper Canada from American military aggression and territorial expansion. Thus, establishing the current town which was incorporated in 1882. In this adventure you will visit some of the past and present.
