Tour of old Visby

The medieval town of Visby is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Scandinavia and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995. The name comes from vi: "(pagan) sacrificial site", and by: "city" In Gutasagan (mid-14th century) the town is termed only Wi and the word means "holy place, cult place". The oldest finds at the site of today's Visby are dated to the 700-900s AD Many believe that the ring-wall was built as protection from threats coming from the sea, but it was built as protection from peasants who felt that their trade with the city was taxed too high and the peasants rebelled. You will now be able to visit some of the historic sites in Visby
