Discover Sofia as the capital of Bulgaria. It is also the biggest city in the country with more than 2.0 million citizens (including suburbs). Today, Sofia is a dynamic Eastern European capital, distinguished by its unique architecture as well as many beautiful orthodox churches.
Bulgaria's capital hosts many religions. This diversity of religions comes from a long and complicated history, peopled by Romans, Bulgarians, Ottomans, Jews and Greeks, along with other minorities.
All of the religions coexist in Sofia and throughout the country, with churches, synagogues and mosques standing peacefully side by side.
Some with shining domes, some old and crumbling, and some housed in inconspicuous grey buildings.
We are accustomed to thinking of churches as great works of architecture. But many of them also have magnificent interiors. Numerous of the churches of Sofia are like mini-art galleries, packed with frescoes and other artworks, a reflection of the city’s Byzantine heritage.
