Santíssimo Sacramento

The Santíssimo Sacramento is probably the most famous wreck that has occured on the coast around Port Elizabeth. The Sacramento, a Portuguese man o'war, could have changed the naval fortunes of Portugal. This, combined with the courageous 1350km walk by the survivors to Mozambique and the subsequent salvage of the ships many cannons, makes for noteworthy story. The Saramento was a galleon built at the Portuguese ship-building yards at Bessein, just north of Goa, India. The keel was laid in 1636 and it was launched for fitting in 1640. The ship was fitted to carry 60 cannon and was one of the largest ships of her time. Dutch intelligence reported that the Sacramento was had a list and leaked badly, and there were great doubts as to her general seaworthiness. She sunk on her maiden voyage to Lisbon via Southern Africa. She was accompanied by the Nossa Senhora do Atalaya do Pinheiro which was lost in the same storm. Atalaya ran aground between the Fish and Kei Rivers This series is a walk of 1.5km
