The Mason and the Bird

This lab cache invites you to follow the “Mason and Bird Heritage Trail”, following the first 4 km of what used to be the original timber tramway, built in 1870 by the Mason and Bird Timber company to transport timber downhill to Mason's landing in Cannington. The one-way trail has a length of about 4.5 km, 9 km return, this will take you about 2 hours one way (4 hour return). We recommend parking at the Hardinge Park (observe gate opening times). Wear appropriate shoe wear and carry sufficient water! Locations 1 to 3 follow a well-prepared path. Between location 3 and 4 you will have to climb a hill and the path is covered in loose rocks. If you prefer not to walk that section, you have the option to park at the end of the trail and complete location 4 and 5 from the other side. Mobile reception can be a little patchy throughout the trail, so we have increased the geofence to make sure you receive all data you need. Where appropriate, we state exact coordinates to find the required information.
