At 11pm on the 5th of May 1898, the steam ship Maitland left Sydney loaded with passengers and freight bound for Newcastle, but struck gale conditions as it crossed Broken Bay. Huge seas breaking over the vessel flooded the engine compartment and extinguished the fires, leaving it drifting helplessly until just before 6am when it struck a reef off what was then called Boat Harbour. Of the 63 passengers and crew, 24 perished, with the location later renamed Maitland Bay as a memorial to the tragedy.
This Adventure will take you on a hike through some of the spectacular scenery of Bouddi National Park, leading down to the sands of Maitland Bay and along to some remains of the wreck on the eastern point. The total distance is about 5km with an elevation change of 160 metres. If this was a regular cache it would have 4 terrain stars, particularly the "sneaky" track between locations 3 and 4. Avoid high tide or big seas at location 5.
The bonus cache GC8ZXGJ is located close by.
