Welcome to an informative and historical walking tour at the Civil War site of FORT HIGLEY. It was the southwestern-most work in the ring of fortifications that Union Cpt. Poe designed in Nov 1863 to protect Knoxville and Gen Burnside’s army. Named for Cpt Higley, killed at Blue Springs in Oct 1863, it was the last of four hilltop works built south of the Holston River. As you walk the trail you will find numbered, informational signs relating the history of the site. Your focus will be on the ‘ODD’ numbered signs. (EVEN # signs may be of interest, on your return.) Enjoy the trail, learn a bit of Knoxville Civil War History and have some fun. (All information contained herein is taken from the informational signs located along the trail in High Ground Park.)
