From 1936 to 1942 this was a work camp occupied by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 494, one of three CCC companies stationed around Norris during and after the construction of Norris Dam. Today the site is called Camp Sam in honor of a Boy Scout leader who popularized the area for primitive camping. Parking Coordinates are N36 13.025 W084 04.795 This is a walk through AL. It starts at the kiosk on the left. As you pass the yellow gate at 984 feet, begin waking down the old roadbed and take a step back in time to the era of President Roosevelt and his New Deal Projects: The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps.). Travel the wide roadbed 0.4 miles to a CCC Camp that once stood in this hollow from 1933-1942. During these years, 200 men per year worked at this camp providing conservation projects around the area.
