Im groźniejsza kreatura, tym większą miała mieć zdolność odpychania nieszczęść i złych duchów. Dziś trudno odgadnąć faktyczne intencje ich twórców, może niektóre umieszczono tylko w celach dekoracyjnych lub użytkowych, a inne jako godła, ale i tak są intrygujące.
