Zuerst brannte nur ein Haus, doch innerhalb von vier Stunden waren von 316 Häusern 146 abgebrannt. Kirche, Schule, Rathaus, alle Kaufläden waren in Schutt und Asche gesunken. Die herbeigeeilten Feuerwehren aus den umliegenden Ortschaften konnten nur noch verhindern, dass der Untere Markt nicht auch noch ein Raub der Flammen wurde. It had not rained for many weeks in Oberstdorf. The wooden houses with their shingle roofs were bone-dry. On the night of 6th May 1865 the call "Fuirio" echoed through the "Baecker"-alley. At first only one house burned, but within four hours 146 of 316 houses had burned down. Church, school, town hall, all shops had been reduced to ashes. The fire brigades from the surrounding villages were only able to prevent the "Lower Market" from becoming another victim of the flames.
