Footsteps of Zorba The Greek

Kókkino Chorió: Picturesque scenery for the village scenes of a famous movie... Coming north from Georgioupolis, along the coast, you almost automatically end up in Kókkino Chorió. The still quite sleepy little town with the dreamy streets played one of the main roles in the film "Zorba The Greek" with the outstanding Anthony Quinn as Zorbas, based on a novel of Nikos Kazantzakis. Here most of the village scenes were played. Here was suffered, loved, laughed and cried. The church looks exactly as it did in Alexis Sorbas times, and much of Kókkino Chorió is still recognizable when looking for scene images. In Crete, time stands still longer than in other places. If you want to explore the footsteps of Zorba the Greek, start your journey at Kokkino Chorio. The main square of the village is famous as the setting of the famous scene of the weeping widow. Several other scenes were filmed in a local tavern and the church... Look out for the historic locations and solve several film-related questions…
