ANGELICA - No other town or village in Allegany County can boast as long a history as Angelica. That's because the "town where history lives" is the oldest town in Allegany County, even predating the county itself by a year, officially forming in 1805.
According to the book "Angelica at 200," the area was unbroken wilderness, full of trees and wildlife, including bears and wolves. After a thorough examination, Capt. Philip Church chose a site for the town within the vast wilderness and named it after his mother, Angelica Schuyler Church, sister-in-law to Alexander Hamilton.
I became aware of this quaint town from relatives who would host family gatherings in the area and share the famed “salt rising bread,” a tasty treat! Note: parking is available on West Main Street, where indicated, for this walking tour. Enjoy a spin around one of my favorite towns!
