Settlement has been documented since 2000 BC, but the town was only given the nickname of Cardassar (by the thistles) after the Reconquista. When Jaume I occupied the island with his army, a figure of the Madonna appeared in a field near Sant Llorenç, which had hidden in the thistle bushes during the reign of the pagans. Until 1892, the municipality of Sant Llorenç belonged to Manacor, and its independence is documented by a divided rock in front of the town hall.
