New Croton Dam

The New Croton Dam is a dam forming the New Croton Reservoir, a part of the New York City water supply system. It stretches across the Croton River near Croton-on-Hudson, New York. Construction began in 1892 and was completed in 1906. The masonry dam is 266 feet at its base and 297 feet high. Stone masons from Italy were recruited to work on the dam and relocated to New York. Expected to take five years, the dam’s construction was often delayed, including a violent labor strike in 1900. After fourteen years of construction, the dam was completed and at 301 feet high and 2400 feet long, was the largest dam in the world at the time. Today it is recognized as the largest hand-hewn stone structure in the United States. This AL will take you on a walk across the top of the dam. Parking for about twenty-five cars can be found at: N 41 13.683, W 073 51.596. Croton Gorge Park lies below the dam and is a great place to visit. Please note that there is an entrance fee collected from Memorial to Labor Day.
