The Hudson River School of Painting

A group of landscape painters in the mid-19th century have come to be known as the Hudson River School. Their paintings reflect themes of discovery, exploration, and settlement of the time and are very realistic and detailed. Thomas Cole is generally acknowledged as the founder of the movement. Notable artists who painted scenes in our neck of the woods include Samuel Colman, Sanford Robinson Gifford, Julie Hart Beers, and Robert Havell, Jr. The latter is perhaps best known as the principal engraver of Audubon's Birds of America, and he used to live on Havell St in Ossining. This Adventure Lab has five virtual caches that will take you to some of the locations where the Hudson School Painters created their works. They can be done in any order. There will be a physical bonus cache. Collect numbers for the bonus cache as you go.
