The Huddersfield Narrow canal is just short of 20 miles long and goes from Huddersfield to Ashton Under Lyne there are 74 locks to be negotiated in this distance as well as the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK. It was completed in 1811, many men lost their lives in its construction. It closed to navigation in 1944 with many features destroyed. It was restored in what was dubbed " the impossible restoration" and reopened in 2001
