Originally named New Antrim by its first settler, John Suffern, this small village was a strategic outpost for Revolutionary War heroes General George Washington and the French Comte de Rochambeau. When the Erie Railroad arrived in the 1840s, Suffern became an accessible hub for tourists who were looking to escape NYC for long weekends and summer camps at Lake Antrim. Around the late-19th Century, developers built up Suffern's business district and provided housing for people who wished to live here full-time.
Today, Suffern is a commuter's dream, offering easy access to/from NYC, upstate and cross-county. Many buildings in/around the village are over 100 years old and filled with history, so this walking tour will bring you to a few of Suffern's most notable sites.
