Part of the Erie Canal Adventure Lab Trail.
A small village nestled between Utica and Amsterdam, Saint Johnsville was within the Mohawk territory when Europeans first arrived. Palantine Germans began settling in the early part of the 18th century. During the American Revolution, a small battle was fought near here at Fort Klock in 1780. Incorporated in 1857, the village now has a majority of its buildings on the National Register of Historic Places as of 2019.
You will venture near several sites of interest along the historic Erie Canal while completing this adventure. Notice that the old locks are found by traveling .75 miles on an unpaved road which is not maintained from early October to April. Nevertheless it is perhaps the crowning jewel of this adventure and well worth the effort to visit.
