Bases Loaded and More

Williamsport: the birthplace of Little League and home to the Little League World Series, has many art installments located around the downtown area and beyond. These include the Bases Loaded Project, murals painted on the walls with life size and bigger images in the parking lot across from the Community Arts Center, additional sculptures located along the Susquehanna Riverwalk and more. Carl E. Stotz, the lumberyard clerk who stumbled over a lilac bush during a backyard game of catch with his two young nephews in 1938 and came up with the idea for Little League baseball. In 1938, Williamsport resident Carl Stotz wanted to provide an organized baseball program for his nephews and neighborhood kids and dreamed up the notion of a "Little League" (friends helped him name it). By 1939 he had the equipment and field dimensions figured out, and on June 6, 1939 the first game was played. Lundy Lumber beat Lycoming Dairy 23 to 8.
