Exploring Deception Pass in the early 1900s

Welcome to Deception Pass State Park! This adventure will take you back in time to discover some of the significant influences in the development of this uniquely special place as a state park during one of our country’s toughest times in the early 1900s. Please note, this adventure is in no way intended to exclude the value and importance of the Coast Salish to the land the park now encompasses. This adventure is merely a snapshot of the park’s history. To discover more about the area’s tribal heritage and current connections, please consider stopping by the Maiden of Rosario Story Pole or Kukutali Preserve. This adventure will take you to five locations and should be completed in order. All locations are on Whidbey Island and locations can be accessed by car or foot. Please keep in mind, a Discover Pass is required for vehicle entry into all Washington State Parks. Historic images courtesy of Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. This Adventure is sponsored by Washington State Parks.
