Welcome, to the Oromocto Gateway Wetlands Trails! The urban wetland is spread across 17 hectares and boasts 2 boardwalks, rest areas, sculptures and a Conservation Centre.
Wetlands are an area saturated or covered by water seasonally or yearly. The plants that have adapted to grow within the vicinity of saturated soil (hydric) are considered hydrophytes. Canada has the largest amount of wetlands in the world at 1.29 million km2. They serve a fundamental purpose including but not limited to creating habitat for hundreds of species, flood protection, water purification and groundwater recharge.
On your journey through the Wetland - you will notice plants specific to wetlands, a diversity of wildlife, and the vast amount of water held by such a small piece of land. Hopefully, this will allow you to get a sense of the significance an ecosystem like this has.
