Newark's downtown is full of interesting history facts. This short walking tour will take you half way around the square starting at the Old County Jail. You can also drive to each location. Plenty of parking at each stop. At each location you will learn a little more about the history of Newark and some interesting facts about some local residents. Newark is the county seat of Licking County. The first European-American settlers arrived in 1802 led by Gen. William C. Schenck. He named the new village after his New Jersey hometown. Newark was home to many companies including Holophane, Heisey Glass and Owens Corning Fiberglass. Newark has grown to the 16th largest city in Ohio with almost 50,000 residents in 2020. In 1825 the Ohio and Erie Canal was started near Newark. In 1855 Newark became a stop along the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad that was built to connect Pittsburgh to Chicago and St. Louis, and on to Columbus in 1857.
